St Chad’s Churchyard is one of Lichfield’s most historic sites, with origins dating back to the 7th century. The area is traditionally associated with St Chad, who settled here around AD 669 and established a religious community, preaching and baptising at a nearby spring now known as St Chad’s Well.
Over the centuries, the site has been associated with pilgrimage and has served as a place of burial, while the wider city became an important centre of devotion to St Chad. The churchyard is now closed to new burials and is maintained by Lichfield City Council. Through its care, the council preserves the site’s heritage and maintains it as a peaceful and accessible green space for residents and visitors.
